Wedding Wednesday: The Honeymoon

When I was a little girl, I had always envisioned a grand wedding and where after the reception, my husband would carry me off my feet to our car that had been decorated with ridiculousness by our friends and we'd drive off to catch a plane to somewhere tropical for our honeymoon.

But, as I got older and met J, the more I realized how unconventional we were. And nothing like how I had envisioned about my wedding when I was a little girl actually happened. And truth be told, I am 110% ok with that. In fact, how everything really went down was probably better than I could have ever dreamed.

So, needless to say, our wedding and honeymoon weren't very conventional. After our wedding in Costa Rica, we stayed in the country for about another week or two with a group of our friends who wanted to stay, too. We explored other parts of CR that we hadn't before and it was all in all a great time.

Before leaving California to Costa Rica for the wedding, I had a job interview set up in Cuenca, Ecuador a few weeks after the wedding date. So we just planned that after the wedding, we'd just keep on moving south to Ecuador. It wasn't certain that I would even get the job, but we were (or are) crazy and went with good faith anyways. (And luck was on our side because both J and I got jobs at the same school).

Anyways, rewind to before Cuenca. J and I hadn't really planned a real honeymoon. We left Costa Rica and headed to Ecuador. We stayed in Quito for a few nights. Then we headed to Baños, stopping there for a few days, before heading to Cuenca.

We really fell in love with Baños and we had such a fun time there (a full post with details and pictures on the city can be found here: Favorite Places: Baños, Ecuador). We decided (recently, actually-- like last week) that we considered our time in Baños our "honeymoon" because it was the first time after the wedding that we were by ourselves and just enjoying our post-marital status.

Since Ecuador, we have been on many other lovely escapes and J has said that they are all part of our honeymoon and that our honeymoon hasn't ended. And I would have to agree with him. ;)

Wedding Wednesday: Fave & least fave part of the day

It's been quite a while since my last Wedding Wednesday post-- since August, to be exact (yikes!) -- I decided to get back on it.

Today I'm on number 12:

favorite part of the day and least favorite part of the day: can be anything.

Well my most favorite part of the day is when I get to be with J. Cliché, I know, but it's so true. We're so lovey-dovey when we're alone, it's sickening. . . but I love it! And don't worry- we know how to control ourselves in public. =)

Least favorite part of the day is- duh- when we're away from each other. It's ridiculous, I know. One time I went to the movies with some friends- I was literally gone for about 3 hours- and I was missing him like crazy. Ridic, right?! And I hate when I have to leave him to go to work or vice versa.

I've had some people tell me we're in a "honeymoon" phase..."enjoy it while it lasts...", etc. etc. but we've been together for 7 years (married for 2 of those years) and we've always been like this.... I think it's no phase.

Granted, we're not perfect. At all. We have our ups and downs. We have our fights. But that never affects our love that we have for each other. We'll continue to be the same 'ol ridiculously lovey couple always.

J & I are really big Erykah Badu fans. She is my favorite. So while we were trying to pick a song for our first dance, I knew it had to be one by her. We chose Erykah Bady ft. Stephen Marley "In Love With You." We first heard this song while we were hanging out in a hostel on our first trip to Costa Rica and instantly fell in love with it.

Wedding Wednesday: The Cake & Food

10. The Cake & Food

Like I've mentioned before in post number 6 - The Colors - we had two events for our wedding celebration: a pre-wedding open house in California and the actual wedding in Costa Rica.

Our pre-wedding event was held at a Thai restaurant-- so you know we had some bomb foodage going on there! Yellow curry, pad thai, chicken satay, pineapple fried rice.... I can't even remember it all! I don't have a picture of the food- but I'm sure you get the gist!

Our very talented friend Amanda made us an AMAZING cake that really showed what J & I are about-- traveling! She did such an incredible job. The whole cake was shaped like a suitcase. Inside was a beach scene with little Lego figurines of J & I. She even had edible flags of every country J & I had traveled together. There were so many details, it was just really a great cake-- I wish I could have froze the whole thing to keep it forever. But it was red velvet, which is a big weakness of mine, so we had to eat it. And not only did it look awesome, it was delicious, too! The whole thing was almost gone in minutes.

Then in Costa Rica, we wanted the food to be comida tipica-- typical Costa Rican food. We had a choice of beef, pork or chicken, prepared Costa Rican style and the sides-- beans and rice, patacones (fried plantains) and a salad. Again, I forgot to have someone take a picture of the food-- but I assure you, it was delicious! I love the food in Costa Rica- it's some of my favorite.

We ordered a small cake from a local bakery in town. We sat down with the owner, talked to him about what we wanted and he really worked with our budget. They did a great job and the cake was absolutely delicious- people even said it was the best cake they had ever tasted! Since our reception was outside, so was the cake, so yes- the cake looks like it was sweating (which it probably was), but that did not affect its deliciousness. And we had to bring our Lego figurines from the California cake to add to it for the finishing touch.

Wedding Wednesday: The Reception

9. The Reception

Our wedding reception was fun. Like, super fun. You'll be able to tell from all the crazy pictures I'm about to post. Don't worry, I'll only be posting the rated PG ones... maybe a few questionable-maybe-PG-13 ones.

We had rented out a whole bungalow for everyone that came to the wedding so that we could all be together the night before & day of the wedding. There was a larger patio area and that's where the reception was held. We had about 50 people there, so we didn't need tons of space.

We had our first dance, ate amazing comida tipica (typical Costa Rican food), listened to speeches from the best man, MOH & others, the garter and bouquet toss, father-daughter dance... you know, typical wedding reception stuff. When that was all done, it was party time! Since we basically had the whole place to ourselves, we could be as loud as we wanted for as long as we wanted. I don't even remember what time we went to bed...

But it was so fun and I really wished the night could have never ended.

Here are some pictures-- some 'normal', but mostly crazy. And yes-- we were hot & sweaty & most people were half naked by the end of the night. Gotta love Costa Rica. Pura Vida!

It was surprisingly easy to plan a destination wedding-- especially in Costa Rica in the little town we had fallen in love with 5 years before (Puerto Viejo). We got in contact with some great people there who were a major help and really worked with us and our very tight budget. Everything turned out so well, despite some minor problems here and there (like, the water running out the DAY OF the wedding... that was pretty terrible) but you know, everything worked itself out and we got through it.

Our close friends and family who were able to make it really enjoyed themselves. They still talk about it to this day. I don't mean to brag, but it's definitely a wedding to go down in the books & people will talk about for a long, long time. =)

Wedding Wednesday: The Little Accessories

8. The Little Accessories

On my wedding day, I had on very little accessories. I didn't wear a veil... or shoes. But I did make these feet bracelet things (what are they called?!). I think they came out pretty nice & they were perfect for a beach wedding:

Even during most of the reception I wasn't wearing any shoes. That's just how I do.

As for jewelry, I had on a simple bracelet (that I also made) and I just wore white studded earrings. I had a flower in my hair. During the reception, one of my sister-in-laws gave us kukui nut leis from Hawaii. And that's pretty much it as far as accessories go.

Today I'm on number 7-- the dress.

To be quite honest, I've never really had “the perfect dress” in my mind, even when I was growing up. Maybe that was due to the fact that I wasn't very much of a girly girl and was more of a tomboy. Or maybe it just wasn't something that important to me to think about? All I know is that I didn't know what kind of dress I wanted until I was engaged and scouring bridal magazines for ideas. I would check-out stacks and stacks of bridal magazines from the library. I saw tons of beautiful dresses I loved, but I had two major rules for myself-- it had to be a dress practical for the beach and it had to be within my price range, no exceptions. Believe me, my price range was LOW. Most brides probably spend more on getting their eyebrows waxed than I did for my dress.

Here are mine and Jason's engagement photos. We used all of these in our wedding invites, so people got different ones. And obviously, we didn't hire a professional to do them, we did them ourselves with the help of a tripod (because we didn't want to spend tons of money on pictures AND doing it ourselves gave the photos our own special, personal touch). Yes, some are silly and yes we even used those to send in the invites. =)

I'm not a fancy girl- especially when it comes to jewelry, that is why the ring J got me is perfect: nice, simple, beautiful.

And let me say that when a girl picks out her own engagement ring-- I think that's super lame and takes the specialness and surprise out of it all- straight up. I went to university in Utah and it was rampant out there and I just shook my head every time I heard about couples who went out on dates to pick out her ring. So dumb.

First off, let  me just say that I am a tough one to surprise because I tend to find out/figure out things quite quickly… but not this time… The night Jason proposed was one of the best nights of my life, mostly because I wasn't expecting it, AT ALL.

Jason and I had often discussed the topic of marriage before. Basically it was pretty set in my mind that he didn't believe or like marriage. He knew where I stood on the issue- I wanted to be married, I wanted a wedding.  We respected each others’ opinions and desires. In my head, I was thinking “Ok, if he actually DOES propose, it won’t be until AFTER I graduate college, and if not then- then he probably won’t do it for YEARS after that” (I was still in university at this time).

Today's #2. When I knew he was the one...
It's actually hard to say the exact moment when I knew he was the one. I know that I had fallen madly in love him and I knew I wanted to spend quite a long time with him, forever even. We had gone through ups and downs in our relationship. Even when I felt like I couldn't handle our downs, even when thousands of miles separated us at times, we still stuck through it. I think a defining moment for us was after my trip to Palau to visit him... after that, I had felt like we could make it through anything and I felt like we had taken a step forward in our relationship. He'd always known my thoughts and views on marriage and I knew his. I knew when he had come back from the Peace Corps a few months early to be with me, he was serious about us. Maybe that's when I knew for sure. . .

I figure I'd like to participate in this cute, silly thing to help me keep track of things, like the wedding and whatnot seeing how I haven't been able to do much tracking since we moved to Ecuador right after the wedding, and now to South Korea shortly after that. So here it goes.

How it All Began:
Jason and I met through my best friend. We started off as friends at first. My best friend and I would hang out with him and his friends quite often. Then my best friend moved out of state to go to university, but I still hung out with Jason and his friends.
